Hi, Bates! How are you today?
"I'm doing well, just feeling a little stir crazy with this cold weather."

I see you've been at the shelter for a couple months now, why do you think your forever home hasn't found you yet?

"I've met a lot of great potential forever families, but my biggest drawback is that I'm not the right dog for just anybody. I want a forever home, and I am a good boy, I just don't have many manners. I forget how strong I am and that scares people I think. I really don't mean to turn people away."

So what would be the specifications for your forever home?
"I think they need to be people who have had high energy dogs before and have experience training stubborn dogs. I'm very smart, but I don't always come across as a good listener. I know how to sit and shake and I'm very patient when I do that! I just need someone who also has a lot of patience and time to devote to me. It would be best if my future adopter could take me to training classes and help me become a more well-behaved and confident guy. I don't like being alone so someone who can be with me most days, works from home, or can take me with them a lot would be my ideal forever home."

When you say you don't like being alone, what do you mean?
"I just prefer to be with my people and if I've had proper exercise I am a calmer boy with them. I can relax if you're busy, I just prefer to be near you. I tend to have some anxieties when left alone, but I just hate the feeling of not knowing when you're coming back."

What would be your non-canine spirit animal?
"Definitely a bunny rabbit. I am a really good jumper and sometimes think I'm as small as a rabbit too."

Do you have an idea of a perfect Friday night?
"First of all, I think every day should be Friday. My ideal evening would be with my people whether we go for a nice run or walk or just play in the yard for a long time. I would then love to spend time indoors chewing on a (very durable) bone or chew toy. We could have some delicious supper together and then snuggle up close to watch a movie."

Are you more dependent or independent?
"I'm content to hang out by myself as long as I know you're around, but I can learn to be okay without you for smaller periods of time."

Do you have a favorite toy?
"I've been told I need durable toys, but I think it's fun to figure out how to destroy any toy. I really like nylabones or kong toys! The squeakier the better!"

What would you say is your biggest flaw?
"I like to think I don't have any flaws, just areas that need perfecting. But my biggest downfall is probably that I'm very strong and intrusive with my advances when I get excited to see you. I can be mouthy and jumpy, especially with new people and when we're playing. This is why the staff and I feel I'd do best with supervised children 16 and older."

Is there anything else you'd like to mention to your future forever family before I go?
"I just want to add that I may not be the calmest or most well-behaved dog, but I promise I'll love you forever. Please don't let my kennel presentation stop you from taking me out for a walk if you're interested in me. I just get so excited I don't know what to do with myself. I am neutered, microchipped, frontlined, received a rabies vaccination, and started on other vaccinations too! Come in and give me a chance to show you my big heart."

Thank you, Bates!
Bates isn't sure how he feels about other dogs or cats. If you have a dog at home please bring them here to meet him before adopting. Come and check him out today!
